I called it - first measles death in the ongoing outbreak in the Dutch Bible belt

I was at university when a reactor in the Chernobyl atomic power plant burst, causing the largest radiation contamination before Fukushima. I recall that for years, milk in Europe would have the Becquerel printed on them. What I remember most about April 1986 is the face of my Physics professor, when he announced that he would not teach for the rest of the semester, since he was the main radiation safety advisor to his party. There was just quiet resignation, not a hint of triumph or satisfaction about having been right all along about the dangers of this particular type of power plant.

Without wanting to sound overly dramatic, I have an idea how he feels. Today, the Dutch Health Ministry RIVM announced the death of a 17 year old young woman from measles complications. She had not been vaccinated against measles, like most in the current (and previous) outbreak(s) in the Dutch Bible belt. I called it. I did not want to be right. However, measles in the developed world have a mortality rate of 1 reported death per 1000 reported cases. Last week, the reported cases in the Netherlands reached 2016 of which 121 had been treated in the hospital, 61 with pneumonia and 1 with encephalitis. It was just a matter of time. And while the death of one young woman, as tragic as it may be, cannot be compared to the death and devastation that Chernobyl caused, it would have been totally preventable. Bitter.

Get your MMRs.

  1. Sadder still would be that her death from measles is not a catalyst for parents to get their children immunized with MMR vaccine. Measles is not benign and not restricted to young children, in a large community of unvaccinated children and adults.

  2. There is more to this story. In the Netherland the RIVM made it quite clear that during the epidemic anyone between 12 and 18 could have themselves MMR-immunized at goverment costs, if they had missed earlier immunizations. The girl was crippled by a deformation of the spine and confined to an electric wheelchair since early childhood. The principal of her school said she had a fragile health and had been having 'lung problems' since the beginning of this term.

Now a person with such a fragile health is just the kind of person who really needs to be protected by vaccination and also by having classmates and contacts who are all vaccinated. But she attended a strictly protestant highschool where 14 years ago also a pupil aged 17 died of measles.

It is said she consciously chose not to get an MMR-jab. Whether she was subject tot pressure is unknown. On the one hand these people emphasize that it is all up to your own conscience, but on the other hand it would not have been easy for her to get a jab in the municipal health center without assistance.

Classmates said in blogs that they feared for her life every time she got flulike symptoms.

    1. thank you for the background information, Jan (do you have a link for that? I may do a follow up post).

This is makes it even more tragic, a) because she was offered the MMR and declined and b) because anti-vaccine activists are going to be all over the fact that she had a "pre-existing condition" and conclude that measles are really not dangerous when you are healthy (and following their diet or other quasi-religious rules that make the foundation of their vaccine refusal). My heart goes out the family and friends!

  4. We really have no idea what would have happened had she received the MMR shots. It is possible that the shots could have made her short life even more difficult, given that she was in a fragile health state from a crippling deformation of the spine. She did not have the advantages of a typical healthy life style, being confined to a wheelchair. This is an anecdotal story to say that the MMR vaccinations could have saved the day for her precious life, when in fact, no one knows how her fragile body would have handled them.

here is another anecdotal story of a woman's loss...

So how does a mother feel when her baby is dead from vaccines and all she hears from doctors, the government and media is that vaccines are safe and effective?

In short, her son developed seizures and started vomiting after his first round of vaccines, and then again after the second. The doctors dismissed her, saying it was a coincidence at first, and then another said it could be Alexander's disease, and suggested she not have any more children because they could all be inflicted with this condition. Sadly, her son dies.

" Vaccination killed him, I have no doubt. If he crawled under the sink and drank the same poisonous concoction of heavy metals, formaldehyde, foreign proteins, multiple viruses and a host of other toxins, the emergency room would have called it poisoning. Because it was injected into his body, it’s called ’a coincidence’! Funny about that. I have since met many parents with similar stories."

Bitter? I am sure she was more than bitter.

    Her story ends well....

"I have 3 healthy, totally unvaccinated children, who have never had a childhood disease. Unlike their vaccinated friends who have often succumb to the diseases they have been vaccinated against. I kept these children fit and well using what is provided by nature – natural foods, clean water, sunshine, clean air, exercise, adequate sleep and a loving and nurturing environment."

Had she followed their suggestions of the doctors, this would just be another incredibly sad story.
    She is a warrior!

here is the full story..... http://naturematters.info/

Please, in honor of her son, think twice about MMR's.

  6. Excuse me Lilady, what IS the truth about that child's death? It clearly states,

"As is the case with most anecdotes, not enough information is given to let us know what happened" It is clear, through her frustration and fast learning curve from dealing with terrible, immediate reactions to vaccines, she took the future health of her family into her own hands, and has a wonderful outcome with 3 unvaccinated, healthy children despite her doctors recommending not to have future children.

This was my whole point in commenting here about the 17 year old. You gals ALSO use anecdotal stories when it suits your needs.....
as Catherina says in her "know it all" article about the bible belt...

......."And while the death of one young woman, as tragic as it may be, cannot be compared to the death and devastation that Chernobyl caused, it would have been totally preventable. Bitter."

....... "However, measles in the developed world have a mortality rate of 1 reported death per 1000 reported cases. Last week, the reported cases in the Netherlands reached 2016 of which 121 had been treated in the hospital, 61 with pneumonia and 1 with encephalitis".

You did not want to call it. What were you calling, if there is a death reported per 1000 cases. Sounds like they had a better rate, having over 2000 cases and only 1 death. For you to say her death would have been totally preventable we can all agree that you are using your bias here to make such grand statements.

There is no miraculous way to go back in the 17 years old life and see how differently her already compromised health and life would have turned out had she been vaccinated. Perhaps the vaccines may have negatively affected her health and caused her to have a similar fate as the baby whose life ended much too soon. I am very happy that this woman went on to have 3 healthy children. Her first born who suffered a mysterious illness, perhaps, could have had a healthy happy existence like his following 3 siblings did. Sadly, we will never know this either.

No, it is an anecdote that the father's family disputes. (see comment #5 of lilady's link)

"Sounds like they had a better rate, having over 2000 cases and only 1 death."

And how is that a "good" thing? Do tell us how the MMR vaccine with the Jeryl Lynn mumps component causes that much mortality, with actual scientific references and not anecdotes. Just post the PubMed Identification Numbers of the studies by reputable qualified researchers that show the MMR vaccine is worse than measles.

Also, the Wales measles outbreak had one death in just over a thousand cases. And do not forget that one in ten were hospitalized. If you think that is a just a "minor" effect of getting measles, then do tell us why it is better to treat up to 10% who get measles, rather than prevent it with a vaccine with verifiable statistical documentation, no anecdotes.

Oh, and in other news there is an outbreak of measles in western Canada, in the province of Alberta: No one confirmed with measles was vaccinated.

So it is "only an anecdote" and not to be regarded as fact when the health ministry says the death was from measles, and we are supposed to believe Ms. Messenger's story even though there is other evidence showing otherwise?

If the young lady had been vaccinated for measles, and not exposed to a measles outbreak she would not have died from measles. How is that so difficult to figure out?

Now, where is the verifiable evidence that the MMR vaccine causes at least one death in two thousand doses that I asked for? Or any PubMed indexed study from a reputable qualified researcher that it is more dangerous than measles?

Also, where is the statistics showing it is cost effective to skip measles vaccination, let every child take their chances with about 10% getting hospital care instead of providing two MMR doses per child. Measles is very infectious, and before the first vaccine was available over 90% of children had it before age fifteen. The outbreak in Wales, and the present outbreak in Alberta shows it does spread fast.

Catherina says the 17 year old girl's death was totally preventable. How is this tactic any different. It is a choice still... full stop. Again, this is anecdotal story about the 17 year old as we have no idea the quaility of her life had she had vaccines! She had a very compromised immune system, and we just as easily surmise that her health could have been far worse if were inundated with vaccines. You still have NO proof that it would have saved her life. You gals are just as guilty of using stories to fulfill your bias.

Vulnerable people are in extra need of protection, so vaccination is more important if anything (Hint: it would not make her underlying health worse), and vulnerable people also need the added protection from herd immunity, which thanks to the selfish and stupid people in her community she did not get.

My son was born with a rare genetic disorder, which caused profound and multiple intellectual and physical impairments (spastic quadriplegia, bilateral hip dysplasia, severe scoliosis and kyphosis). He also was immune suppressed (pancytopenia).

He was completely vaccinated following the CDC/AAP Recommended Vaccine Schedule and we depended on parents to not "hide in the herd" and to get their children fully immunized.

Who the hell are you to determine that a disabled child is not worthy of that protection?

You, however, need to reconsider your ridiculous rhetoric bull crap on herd immunity.....

"Vaccine-induced herd immunity is a lie used to frighten doctors, public-health officials, other medical personnel, and the public into accepting vaccinations..... Neil Z. Miller, in his latest book The Vaccine Information Manual, provides compelling evidence that herd immunity is a myth."

"One of the grand lies of the vaccine program is the concept of "herd immunity." It is based on the idea that if a certain percentage of the population is immunized against an infectious disease, epidemics can be prevented. The exact percentage changes, mainly, in my opinion, to suit the vaccine manufacturers. In the beginning it was 68 percent, but now some are calling for 95 to 100 percent immunization to reach these goals. We are constantly told, and many doctors believe, that herd immunity has prevented epidemics from occurring in modern America. Unfortunately, there is very little evidence of this for a number of reasons. .....vaccines for most Americans declined to non-protective levels within 5 to 10 years of the vaccines. This means that for the vast majority of Americans, as well as others in the developed world, herd immunity doesn't exist and hasn't for over 60 years. Vaccine Safety Manual by Neil Z. Miller. (Preface)

The belief in herd immunity leads to many delusions. One of them is that when the number of immune people in a community drops below a certain point, it will make the next epidemic come sooner. In 1976 in Britain the vaccination rate for whooping cough dropped from 76% to 42%, because there had been publicity of bad side effects from the vaccine. The medicrats expected that the drop in the vaccination rate would make the next whooping cough epidemic come sooner, as well as expecting it to be worse. The whooping cough bacteria paid no attention to human theories, and the disease followed the usual timing of its natural cycle of virulence. Medicrats expressed surprise that the epidemic did not come sooner. There were also fewer cases and fewer deaths during this epidemic. The much lower vaccination rate of 42% made no difference to the long term decline of whooping cough, which had been happening for a hundred years. 2. Anonymous, I haven't much time, so to be brief:

In UK, the drop in pertussis immunisation was immediately followed by a new epidemic of pertussis. Dozens of kids died, because of an unverified myth about the vaccine. The graph here explains it all for you (see fig 24.1 page 278)
      https://www.gov.uk/government/uploads/system/uploads/attachment_data/file/147976/Green-Book-Chapter-24-dh_125944.pdf

The level required for effective herd immunity is different for DIFFERENT diseases. The more infectious it is, the higher the herd immunity level needs to be to avert an outbreak. So for diseases like measles it is around 95%, but for mumps it may be 60%. Do us a favour and do some research before you blight this blog with your unevidenced, plain wrong opinions.

Please stop making parents who question childhood vaccination feel guilty that they may be putting others at risk! You girls are total bullies about it.

    http://www.anh-europe.org/news/winters-upon-us-vaccination-faq#Question_3

"The key concept to bear in mind with herd immunity is that, however hysterical the coverage, herd immunity is only a theory. A plausible theory, but a theory nonetheless – and one that developed out of observations of natural immunity, not vaccination effects. Statisticians observed that populations were protected when sufficient members contracted the wild form of a disease, and subsequently acquired lifelong immunity. We simply do not know whether or not the same is true of vaccination in general or of particular vaccines, but we can certainly say this: discredit herd immunity, and a powerful supporting plank of vaccine theory vanishes into dust. So the vaccine manufacturers have a double motivation for pushing herd immunity, because it sells more vaccines and it helps to maintain an environment in which vaccines are considered essential for health.
Bearing all this in mind, it’s clear that parents who choose not to vaccinate their children should not feel guilty. Regardless of the propaganda, the evidence shows that unvaccinated children can catch infectious diseases from vaccinated children; and therefore, high rates of vaccination cannot effectively protect those members of society who are unable to take vaccines. This point alone puts a rather large nail in the coffin of herd immunity! Only widespread natural immunity is guaranteed to protect a society from infectious diseases, but since it relies on most citizens having healthy diets and lifestyles, we have a long way to go. Wouldn’t it be interesting if the pressure was on to have a healthy diet and lifestyle in order to increase natural immunity instead?"

    2. "Please stop making parents who question childhood vaccination feel guilty that they may be putting others at risk!"

The community immunity by others vaccinating is actively protecting your child from measles, mumps, etc. Don't deny that benefit.

You used an interesting source, I found this statement interesting: "Statisticians observed that populations were protected when sufficient members contracted the wild form of a disease, and subsequently acquired lifelong immunity."

It is interesting because there is no reference supporting that statement (though in the same paragraph is a link to the Age of Autism blog). Plus they used the word "sufficient." Which may exclude those who became permanently disabled or died due to measles (or other illness).

In reality, in the dawn of epidemiology (starting with Sir Ronald Ross), the waxing and waning immunity in a region what caused the cycles of epidemic. As the disease goes through, the survivors have immunity. Then more susceptible children are born, and after a few years when there are enough, there is another epidemic cycle.

At least a century ago statisticians knew very well the harm of measles. The following is a very interesting read, especially the last page:

Lilady!!!!!! please tell me that #7 makes just a teensy bit of logic to you. Please tell me you have a working brain of your own....

    7. Infants, who are advised ONLY mothers milk till the age of six months and beyond because their fragile system will not tolerate anything else are given 36 extremely toxic vaccine shots, including booster doses, an act that defies both logic and science.

Please ignore your compulsive need to have scientific papers on this one. If a baby's system is so fragile, why in world would any caring person flood it with so many CRAZY shots. How can this be healthy? How are their little systems able to handle it all. I can tell you that some handle it by suffering unnecessary problems like ear aches, eczema, flu like symptoms, asthma etc. and some suffer much more seriously.

    lets also look at #3.

    3. There has never been any official attempt to compare a vaccinated population against a non vaccinated population to know what vaccines are doing to the children and the society. Independent private studies (Dutch & German and the most recent KIGGS (Aug 2011) study involving 7724 children worlwide) have revealed that vaccinated children suffer much more than their un-vaccinated counterparts.

    http://www.vaxchoicevt.com/science/studies-comparing-vaccinated-to-unvaccinated-populations/
    (see below)

The following is taken in part from Public Testimony of Dr. Heather Rice at the Vermont Department of Health hearing on Act 157, 10/19/2012:
No study of health outcomes of vaccinated people versus unvaccinated has ever been conducted in the U.S. by CDC or any other agency in the 50 years or more of an accelerating schedule of vaccinations. (RED FLAG! RED FLAG!)
However, a German study published in 2011 compared the health outcomes of 94 unvaccinated children versus 13,359 vaccinated children (Dtsch Arztebl Int. 2011 February; 108(7): 99–104.”Vaccination Status and Health in Children and Adolescents; Findings of the German Health Interview and Examination Survey for Children and Adolescents (KiGGS).” (pdf of article – pdf of replies). Because the number of unvaccinated children included in the analysis is so small, statistical evaluation is nearly impossible. However, the study did show that unvaccinated human children in two of the three age groups under investigation showed fewer infections and atopic disorders than those who were vaccinated, and none of the unvaccinated children younger than 10 had developed asthma.

Additionally, there is an ongoing survey in Germany with currently 12,583 participants and the results of this survey show that unvaccinated children are far less affected by common diseases than vaccinated children.

please put up something, anything, perhaps raw logic that proves increasing numbers of vaccines are good for you versus no vaccines.

Shut up..... what? are we in 5th grade?

    1. "Infants, who are advised ONLY mothers milk till the age of six months and beyond because their fragile system will not tolerate anything else"

On whose authority? What evidence do they use, there are no scientific references? And how well to babies tolerate pertussis, tetanus and Hib bacteria?

Also, are babies who have no mothers (like my grandmother, whose mother died giving birth to her) just be allowed to die? Do bash adoptive parents for using formula? Did you tell the surgeons to not use anesthesia for your son's surgeries?

"There has never been any official attempt to compare a vaccinated population against a non vaccinated population"

Wrong. Though those on children were done a while ago in institutions for the "feeble minded." So the Belmont Report was implemented.

"(Dutch & German and the most recent KIGGS (Aug 2011) study involving 7724 children worlwide) have revealed that vaccinated children suffer much more than their un-vaccinated counterparts."

Haven't you already been told multiple times that the self selected internet survey by a homeopath was a joke? Also, the real KIGGS survey on almost 14000 children concluded: "The prevalence of allergic diseases and non-specific infections in children and adolescents was not found to depend on vaccination status."

It seems that that your source is in serious error. Especially when they come up with this blatant lie: "Additionally, there is an ongoing survey in Germany with currently 12,583 participants and the results of this survey show that unvaccinated children are far less affected by common diseases than vaccinated children."

Look, I gave you the link to the actual study, it does not say that.

It is being discussed at the Science Based Medicine blog. Perhaps you should go over there and tell them all about your scientific studies from the University of Google. I am quite sure your input would be quite valuable.

    3. By the way, Dr. Heather Rice is a chiropractor. No wonder she screwed up the conclusions of the German survey. Or she lied. You have a choice between her being incompetent or just a liar.

      rense.com ???? with Barbara Loe-Fisher's commentary ????

You've got to be kidding !!!!

I don't even know what that Indian doctor was claiming...and I am quite familiar with mangled spoken and written English.

"7. Infants, who are advised ONLY mothers milk till the age of six months and beyond because their fragile system will not tolerate anything else are given 36 extremely toxic vaccine shots, including booster doses, an act that defies both logic and science."

I viewed the CDC Recommended Vaccine Schedule for Children Ages 0-18 and the Indian Vaccine Schedule and I don't see any "booster vaccines" being recommended.

Could you point out to me which of the vaccines administered during an infants first six months of life are boosters...and which vaccines are "primary series vaccines"?

Just keep posting "Anonymous". We are really having fun with your deplorable lack of basic science skills and your atrocious inability to decipher written English.

  13. Dutch Bible Belt. It's happened before and will happen again in communities where significant numbers of parents don't vaccinate their children:
